Last week was another horrible week...
Bailey, a blind kitten who was found in the streets, came into our care on the 17th January 2018.
She was blind, had severe gingivitis and was very scared but with a lot of TLC and medication she turned into a lovely happy kitten who was always playing and purring.
But... because she became very quiet these last weeks (not playing anymore) I knew there was something wrong with her and took her to the vet on Wednesday 16th May 2018.
The vet advised to do a general blood test (especially to check her liver and kidneys) and also a FIV/FelV test, although we did this already on the 14th February 2018 which came out negative.
The general result came out first: her liver and kidneys were fine so the vet already started planning her treatment (because her gums were in a very bad state) but we had to wait for the FIV/FeLV test result.
Nor the vet nor me expected a bad result so it was a BIG shock when the result showed FeLV positive!
I just couldn't believe it and asked the vet over and over again if it was 100% sure.... it was....
The vet explained that this test isn't always accurate on kittens and it could also be that at that time she was still developing it.
I was devastated and didn't know what to do!
To be honest I knew what we had to do because FeLV is the most contagious disease and we just couldn't put our other 80 cats at risk... and just the same Bailey would die slowly from this horrible disease.
The vet advised me to call Charlie (my husband) to tell him and to discuss, what I did (in tears).
He was also devastated but common sense told both of us that we had to make the most difficult decision...
Bailey went over the rainbow bridge very peacefully, in my loving hands, but it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do...
We loved her so much and at least we were able to give her the most happy life she could have ever wished for.
RIP my little darling

7th May 2018
Last week has been one of the most sad and hardest weeks in my life and it's still very difficult for me to write this update.
When I came into the kitten room Wednesday morning, I wasn't greeted by 5 kittens.
Usually they all come running to me and climb my legs but this morning I didn't see Cinnamon, who was always the first to climb on my lap and even on my shoulder.
I was looking around to find her and can't describe the shock when I found her lifeless on the floor.
I just couldn't believe it as the night before she was still on my lap and playing, not ONE sign that something as wrong with her...
To make things worse: she was already adopted (booked) by a father and his lovely 7 years old daughter who came here the Sunday before and immediately fell in love with her.
The daughter, Ella, was so happy with her and named her Cinnamon.
I've told them that they had to wait until she would be a bit bigger (1 kilo) as we never home very small kittens and they were happy with visiting her regularly until she would be ready to leave.
So I had to bring them this terrible news.
My heart was broken and still is....
I will never know or understand what happened to her.
RIP little angel, you will be in my heart forever.

To make things worse, Mausje wasn't coming any better so I took him inside our house to keep him by my side to make it easier to (force) feed him every hour with a syringe and to monitor him.
Thursday morning he was lifeless and I thought he passed away but a few hours later he came to life again all of a sudden! He had been in a coma.
I've been caring for him every minute but in the evening his little body gave up.
I still couldn't believe it but the next morning it was obvious that it was really true...
RIP my little fighter, my sweetheart, I fell in love with you the first minute I saw you and told you that you would stay with me forever but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

Tears are dropping when I'm writing this.
Our (unpaid) work is so hard and I will never get used to the sorrow.

At least the other 3 kittens are doing very well.
For them, and all the other cats in our care, we have to carry on...
