June 2023

A male from a colony was taken to the vet by his feeder.
He has nose cancer but fortunately not yet in an advanced state so he had a steroid injection and was released back into his colony.
Unfortunately there's no cure and he will need another steroid injection in 3-4 months to slow down the cancer.

This is one of the most difficult updates ever.... (I don't even know where to start..)

Last Monday (19th June) we took DAZZ to the vet to remove the stitches from his ear.

He was doing quite well, eating very good and taking his medicines (Noroclav) every day so we were really waiting for the day to have the stitches removed.
The stitches were removed and his ear looked quite good although it was split in two but, according to the vet, this wouldn't affect him.

His medication was changed to another antibiotic because he still had a very bad ear infection: Rilexine 75 mg.
Of course we had all trust in this and in the evening I gave him the first dose.

The next morning (20th June 2023) he was very lethargic, he didn't want to eat anything and was just laying on the floor so I contacted the vet and asked if the new medication could cause this.
I didn't get a reply until this morning ("if he's still bad can you bring him in the morning") but unfortunately it was too late... he died early this morning...
We're devastated and cried our eyes out.

We don't know if the new medicine caused his death or that he had an underlying condition.
And we don't even know how old he was as he didn't come to us as a kitten but he's been with us for 13 years and we've tried to give him the best life.

Dear DAZZ, we've done everything to save you and keep you without pain but unfortunately we couldn't.

We loved you so much ❤

BENGI went to the vet as we saw last Monday (12th June) that he was flipping his ears and we suspected ear mites and/or an ear infection.
We tried to make an appointment at the vet but that's very difficult nowadays so we gave him drops in the neck (for fleas and ear mites), soothing ear drops and pain killer.
Today he was seen by the vet and she confirmed that he had ear mites and an ear infection; he was cleaned very good by the vet so he already felt much better!
He'll have antibiotics for 10 days.

He's 16 years old, he was born in the garden of our neighbor in front of our house and after a couple of weeks his mother brought him and his sisters to our house.

DAZZ and HONEY were taken to the vet.

DAZZ had surgery on his haematoma ear. His ear was very infected and had pus and blood inside (we KNEW that something was very wrong!)

The vet also saw that he needed a dental and took another 9 teeth off (2 years ago 8 teeth were extracted) so he doesn't have many teeth left now...

After coming home we put him in a cozy recovery cage but soon after he already took off his Elizabethan collar!
We don't blame him as we can imagine how uncomfortable this has to be!
But... it's a BIG problem as he needs to be protected from scratching  his ear...
For now he's not scratching and he's calm so we left him like this and in the coming days we'll see what we can do.

In 10 days he has to go to the vet again to take off the stitches.

HONEY was  taken to the vet also because she's already 3 weeks here and the stitches were still showing (on the side).
We don't have any experience with this as our vet only makes stitches inside so the vet who did this (to neuter her) must be very old fashioned and the person who took her to be neutered has to be very irresponsible as she/he didn't take her to the vet again to take off the stitches.
Unfortunately we don't know anything about her history...

She had to be sedated as it would have been too painful to take the stitches off and once she was sedated she was microchipped also and the vet made a little V-cut in her ear to show that she has been neutered.

The male with cryptorchidism was neutered by our regular vet today.
We'll keep him in our recovery until the weekend.
The poor boy isn't happy with being closed for so long....
He has a cozy carrier to sleep in but he stays in the litter box 😿

We are very worried about DAZZ.
He looked worse and we contacted the vet again and asked if we should give him antibiotics.
We were told to make an appointment so we did... not that easy nowadays and the earliest appointment is Thursday 8th June 2023.

2nd June 2023

We saw that DAZZ has an ear haematoma [a localized bleeding outside of blood vessels]
We contacted our vet and sent pictures to ask what we should do.
The answer was: "we could drain the fluid from his ear. However after draining, there is still a chance of reoccurring. If the ear is not drained, it will resolve on its own with no complications, if would be just a cosmetic issue because he will get a "pillow ear". But it would not be of any harm to him"

So we left it like this as we don't like to cause stress on any cat and trusted the advice.

Another male from one of our colonies was caught also to be neutered but at the vet it showed that he has an undescended testicle (cryptorchidism) and the vet where he was taken (not our usual vet) couldn't neuter him.
Next Monday (05.06.2023) he will go to our usual vet to be neutered.
