July 2017

Picture
31 July 2017
July has been a very emotional month.

Of course our days are always busy with taking care of the cats in our sanctuary and there's ALWAYS something when there are so many but that's something we're used to deal with.

As most of you will know, 8 years ago we also rescued a dog: Bo.
She was found at the beach and when nobody claimed her, we decided to adopt her.
As she grew up with all the cats and kittens she really loved all of them, especially the kittens and became a great baby sitter!

Two years ago she gained a lot of weight all of a sudden and a blood test showed that she was having problems with her thyroids so she had medication every day (for life).
She was doing very well and lost weight but after a few months she got a lump on her thigh and when this was examined it appeared to be fat, the fat that she lost.
Nothing serious but the vet told us that it would have to be removed if it was coming bigger.

It was coming bigger and bigger and was causing her inconvenience in walking so a few weeks ago the vet told us that it would be better to remove it, a simple operation.
So we booked her in to be operated on Wednesday 19th July.
After a blood test was done before the operation we were told that she had problems with her kidneys, nothing serious, only stage 1, but it would be too dangerous to operate her that day and she had to stay on a drip in the clinic for 24 hours to flush her kidneys.
This was already very upsetting as Bo NEVER was out of the house for one day and to leave her in the clinic in a bench was heartbreaking... but what had to be done had to be done...

The next day, Thursday 20th July 2017, she was operated at 10 am and around 12.30 pm the vet told us that she was recovering well but that she had to stay on the drip till 6 pm to flush her kidneys again.
So we went to pick her up at 6 pm and were already shocked that she looked so weak, she could hardly walk and had to be carried into the car.
We were told that she would be groggy that evening but that she would be fine the next day.

After arriving at home we had to carry her inside and put her comfy in her bed but were very worried as she was coming worse and worse but because the vet had told us that she would be "groggy" we were hoping that she would be better soon.
But this didn't happen... she was having spasms and at a time her tongue was hanging out so at time we knew for sure that something was VERY wrong.

At 9.30 pm we called the vet, who was at a party and didn't have a car but after sending her a video she said that she was coming straight away, somebody would drive her here but it would take one hour as she was at the other side of the island.
She arrived at 10.45 pm and exactly at that moment Bo took her last breath.....
We couldn't believe it but the vet confirmed that her heart stopped....
There must have been an underlying problem that we didn't know about.

We were devastated and our house is so empty without her.
Even the cats are missing her and don't understand why she's not here anymore.

Sorry for this lengthy story but hopefully it explains why there hasn't been any updates lately.
We're trying to come to terms with this very unexpected loss.

RIP dear Bo, you'll never be forgotten.

Our beautiful Bubu went to the VERY best home today!
It was a very emotional day as it's always very difficult to give away one of our babies but we're 100% sure that he has the very best loving and caring mummy and daddy.

Munchie had a steroid injection as all the other medications didn't help and we HAD to do something to take care of his skin problem.
According to our vet a steroid injection is safe every 3 months so we opted for this solution again.
